Great Trails and Fall Cycling in Lake George Area

Incredible cycling doesn’t end when summer does; arguably fall is the best time to discover new rides.. The area around Lake George, the Queen of American Lakes, offers some great autumn ride options. Here are four notable spots to explore Lake George by bicycle.

Anyone looking for a longish ride along quiet, backcountry roads should try the Three Lakes Ride. This 32-mile route, on mostly flat or rolling terrain, brings cyclists past Brant Lake, Schroon Lake, and Loon Lake. Expect each body of water to be surrounded by beautiful changing foliage! Make sure to stop at the Hub in Brant Lake for lunch.

Another great cycling option is the Warren County Bikeway. This paved path begins in Lake George Village and runs south for nine miles, ending in the city of Glens Falls. The Bikeway offers plenty of fall foliage to admire as cyclists pedal over rolling hills and past notable historic sites.

More first-class cycling can be found on the nearby Feeder Canal towpath. This nine-mile multi-use trail, suitable for walking, running, and cycling, follows the Feeder Canal, a waterway constructed in the 1800s that connected small upstate communities to the Hudson River, and will now eventually connect with the Empire State Trail in Fort Edward. Cyclists should expect popping foliage color throughout the fall months while riding along the Feeder Canal.

Mountain bikers have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the fall foliage, too. One great place to explore is the North Creek Ski Bowl, offering 20km of professionally built single track trails, ranging from beginner and flow trails to stream crossings, downhill, and technical rocky terrain. Riders at the Ski Bowl will find outstanding views of the distant Adirondack High Peaks, made even more beautiful by the autumn colors.

Those who love cycling year-round should check out the Warren County Cycling Challenge, designed to showcase the diversity of trails and route options available to cyclists of all abilities . Travel forested back country roads along scenic lakes, ride through North Country hamlets, or rolling hills of fields and farms. Participants can choose from 24 on-road and off-road routes. After completing eight rides, participants receive a decal and a finisher’s certificate.
