New hammocks are coming to Gantry State Park.

A popular state park in Long Island City will be replacing it’s damaged and worn out hammocks thanks to a Park and Trail Partnership Grant, administered by Parks & Trails New York. The Friends of Gantry State Park was awarded a $17,000 grant to purchase new hammocks and increase their outreach to the growing neighborhood for volunteers to help with various park projects. Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12-acre riverside park in Long Island City, Queens that has spectacular view of the midtown Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building and the United Nations.

The neighborhood around the park has seen explosive growth in recent years, with no sign of slowing down. This growth has meant an increase in visitors to the park and more wear and tear on the park's amenities. Local residents have voiced the need to replace the hammocks as one of the most needed park improvements. Installing new hammocks will greatly increase the visitor's experience, letting them know that the Friends group is listening to the needs of the community.

Here is a complete list of the the 2018 grant awardees.

The next grant cycle will open in September 2019. As a result of our advocacy efforts, the State Budget included an increase of the fund to $1 million.
