A Welcome Mat for Canalway Trail Cyclists
Introduced in May 2017, Bike Friendly New York (BFNY) is a certification program for businesses that provides special accommodations for cyclists. The program enhances the experience for cyclists on the Erie Canalway Trail and other New York destinations, and boosts trail-based economic development at the local level.
To date, 82 businesses have been certified through the Bike Friendly New York program. BFNY is New York’s first large-scale bike-friendly certification, and is open to a wide range of businesses, from B & B’s and restaurants to retail stores and museums.
To be certified as bike-friendly, businesses must demonstrate that they have taken steps to cater to cyclists, such as becoming knowledgeable about local cycling routes and having basic repair tools available. Businesses that meet the requirements and complete the online application receive a decal to display, and are included in various publications and web listings.
More businesses are deciding to become bike-friendly
Bike tourists need food and places to stay, and they spend money on entertainment and souvenirs. With bicycling being the second most popular activity in the U.S., many businesses are deciding to become bike-friendly to meet the needs of their customers.
Bike Friendly New York and other efforts to encourage outdoor tourism were propelled by Governor Cuomo’s announcement about building the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile mega trail slated for completion in 2020. The Empire State Trail will be the longest multi-use trail in the nation, and a major draw for cyclists and others to visit New York.
“We are thrilled that Bike Friendly New York is gaining momentum, and we are excited to expand the business list along the Canalway Trail. This program brings economic value to trailside communities, and provides additional options for the increasing number of cyclists who use the trail.” said PTNY Executive Director Robin Dropkin.
“As an avid cyclist and one who enjoys on the Erie Canalway Trail, I’ve seen first-hand that businesses recognize the benefits of accommodating the needs of bike riders,” said New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “Being bike friendly makes smart business senses and shows up in their bottom line.”
