Where Two Rivers Meet

Places were set for nearly thirty people at the New York State Historic Preservation Office on Peebles Island, as the staff and trustees of Parks & Trails New York gathered for its quarterly board meeting. Attendees traveled from across the state (some even battled Long Island in-bound rush hour traffic) to gather at a location that exemplifies the mission of Parks & Trails New York.

The day began with a walking tour of the preservation facility providing attendees a rare glimpse of the labs where restoration occurs on historic items from state historic sites throughout the state. Eyebrows raised as each individual preservationist shared a view into their everyday tasks, which often involve working on unique and priceless items. Board members and staff marveled at the collections of paper, textiles, furniture, and sculptures, all awaiting their turn for preparation or restoration and their eventual return to their location for the public to once again admire.

Lunch at the pavilion was improved by a backdrop of the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers --undoubtedly noteworthy due to PTNY's work with the Erie Canalway and the numerous state parks and historic sites who owe their presence to the Hudson.

The meeting portion commenced with a welcoming introduction by the Peebles Island director followed by a short presentation by Karen Kaufmann and Dan Odell from Friends of Schodack Island State Park. The Friends received a grant through the new Park and Trail Partnership Program and shared their experience of the application process with the board.

Board meetings for many organizations allow an opportunity for staff and trustees to interact, communicate, and ask questions in person. This meeting this was no exception as enthusiastic staff offered presentations on our successful endeavors such as Canal Clean Sweep and I Love My Park Day.

We also welcomed three new board members: Charlie Lester, David Reisfield, and Alfredo Torres while acknowledging the commitment and service from departing members Judy Mower and Ed Doherty.

Thanks Peebles Island and the state historic preservation labs for hosting a great board meeting!
