New Campground Opens at Schodack Island

On April 15th, New York State opened their newest campground in the system at Schodack Island State Park. The campground includes 66 campsites and is the first new tent- and trailer-accessible campground to open in the state park system in 35 years. The new campground will offer both electric and non-electric campsites.

Schodack Island is an ideal location for a new campground in the state park system. Only a twenty minute drive south of Albany, Schodack Island sits in the middle of the Hudson River. Bald eagles have been spotted frequently on the island in recent years. They add to an abundance of bird life that includes cerulean warblers, blue herons, marsh wren, swamp sparrow, red-winged blackbird, and willow flycatcher, many of which nest in the marshes or trees within the park.

In addition to its natural resources, Schodack Island State Park has a myriad of recreational resources. There are facilities to dock boats, including a special canoe/kayak launch area, a newly improved bike trail, hiking trails, picnic tables, a volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. Fishing is also allowed.

If you would like to reserve a campsite for this summer, you can do so at reserveamerica.com. Note that there is a two-night minimum stay. Pets are permitted, but only two pets per site.

Happy camping!
