Nalgene on Tap

From the lab to the trail, Nalgene is the leader when it comes to reusable water bottles. Parks & Trails New York is proud to announce the Rochester-based company will once again be sponsoring this year’s Cycle the Erie Canal Tour.

Rochester-based Nalgene is a household name in portable hydration, but did you know that for decades, Nalgene’s technology was used almost exclusively in labs? Beginning in 1949, a small group of chemists working for the Nalge Company created the first line of plastic labware and lab bottles that became noted for their state-of-the art technology and durability. Many scientists, however, started to take note of a less-marketed, but highly-coveted, feature of Nalgene’s lab bottles: their portability.

In the 1970s, rumors of scientists taking the bottles along with them on hiking and camping trips led the company’s president to test out the bottles during a Boy Scout trip with his son. The Scouts used the bottles for storing food, carrying shampoo and camping supplies, and, of course, as water bottles. After the Scouts returned from the trail, Nalgene’s president saw the potential for a new market for their products – outdoor enthusiasts. The rest is history.

Parks & Trails New York is proud to once again welcome Nalgene aboard as a sponsor of this year’s Cycle the Erie Canal Tour.
