The 2025 Empire State Greenways Conference officially kicked off in Kingston on October 15 with a day full of immersive trail and community experiences that brought to life the power of New York’s greenway network.

Our opening day featured three unique, on-the-ground experiences that set the tone for what’s ahead:

Along the Line: Exploring the O&W Rail Trail

Participants laced up their boots for a 4-mile walking tour of the O&W Rail Trail, diving into the rich history of this evolving corridor. With stops along the way, guides shared stories of transformation—how a once-abandoned rail line is now becoming a vital thread stitching together Ulster County communities through recreation, transportation, and heritage.

Streets with Stories: A Walking Tour of Kingston’s Historic District

In collaboration with the Friends of Historic Kingston, attendees stepped back in time in the Stockade District. This walking tour highlighted how the city’s commitment to historic preservation supports a vibrant, walkable downtown and a thriving sense of place. Cobblestone streets, 18th-century architecture, and powerful local stories made this a standout experience.

Trail Tales: A Guided Ride on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail

With the scenic Rosendale Trestle as a backdrop, cyclists joined the Wallkill Valley Land Trust for a guided ride along one of New York’s most beloved rail trails. The journey celebrated how community partnerships have reimagined this former industrial corridor as a vital conservation and recreation resource.

As we continue with panels, workshops, and networking, these outings reminded us that greenways are more than infrastructure—they’re living, breathing parts of our communities.
