Looking for a fun, flexible way to get moving and explore one of New York’s most iconic outdoor destinations? The Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor’s Canalway Challenge invites New Yorkers to get outside, get active, and experience the New York State Canal System and Erie Canalway Trail one mile at a time.
The Canalway Challenge is a free, year-round activity that invites New Yorkers of all ages and abilities to set a personal mileage goal and get moving along the New York State Canal System and Erie Canalway Trail–whether you’re walking, running, biking, paddling, hiking, rolling, or using adaptive gear.
February offers a special opportunity to get outside to complete the Feb. 15 Canalway Challenge. Participants pledge to complete 15 miles walking, running, hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing anywhere within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor by the end of February to earn rewards, including 15-miler crew socks, stickers, and magnets.
During the rest of the year, you can choose the mileage goal that works best for you. The 15-mile challenge is a great fit for families and anyone just getting started, while the 90 and 180-mile options are perfect if you’re looking to build a healthy habit and explore more of the canal corridor. Ready for a big goal? The 360-mile challenge follows the full route from Albany to Buffalo.
Signing up is easy. You’ll get access to a free online mileage log, and you can participate on your own, with a team, or as part of an organization. Finish your chosen challenge, upload a photo, and you’ll earn a completion certificate–plus a commemorative prize.
With more than 524 miles of canals and 360 miles of trail, the Canalway system connects communities, history, and landscapes across New York State. The Canalway Challenge is a simple, meaningful way to enjoy these public spaces and to celebrate how public lands support our physical health, mental well-being, and a more inclusive outdoors for everyone.
