Rochester to Syracuse
The trail travels through the southern outskirts of Rochester where you’ll find plenty of additional recreational activities at the Genesee Valley Park, an 800-acre park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect who designed New York’s Central Park. Beyond Rochester, the communities along the trail showcase their rich Canal heritage in the quaint shops, restaurants and B&Bs. Some of the unique areas to enjoy include the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, a 7,000 acre birdwatching preserve, and the entire Finger Lakes Region, known for its wineries and recreational attractions. Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the Women’s Right Movement is also just a short trip off the trail. Just before Syracuse, Camillus Erie Canal Park includes the Nine Mile Aqueduct (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and the Sims Store a replica of a 19th-century store that today is a museum and gift shop.
