Buffalo to Rochester
The trail between Buffalo and Rochester follows the Canal most closely as it passes through the towns that grew along its shores. The western most segment of the trail begins in downtown Buffalo and includes the scenic Riverwalk along the Niagara River. Eastward in the town of Lockport, you can see the historic “flight of five” locks, one of the few remaining original locks, alongside a modern lock. The towns along this part of the trail are home to many historic canal structures and several lift bridges, which raise and lower to allow boats to pass through the canal. You’ll also find historic landmarks, farmers markets, charming shops, unique museums, quaint B&Bs, boat tours and cobblestone and sandstone buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
