Both riders and non-riding participants can volunteer to help out during the ride. Volunteers who commit to the entire tour ride for free. Time commitments are detailed below and with each job description. There are many volunteer possibilities available, including SAG and luggage truck drivers, rest stop help, route marking and more! Camping at our Buffalo start site (Nichols School) will be available to volunteers on Friday, July 10 . More information on camping will be sent with volunteer assignments in February.

You will receive an automated response when you submit your application. About the end of February applicants will be assigned volunteer positions. If applicants outnumber the jobs, then a waiting list will be formed to fill in any positions that open up between March and the ride.

Time Committments

Each job has an essential organizing meeting (see Required Volunteer Meetings).

Time commitments vary between the different jobs, each job will list the commitment required. The following is a description of the different schedules you will see with the job descriptions:

  1. Work and ride every day (most of these positions require you to be able to ride and arrive at a pre-determined time to work)
  2. Work every other day/ride every other day
  3. Special work schedules-these jobs have specific days scheduled to work.

Required Volunteer Meetings

Meetings marked with an asterisk (*) occur prior to the arrival of the July 11 shuttle from Albany. Please do not choose these positions if you need to shuttle on July 11. There is a return shuttle for $90 per person on July 19th (end of the ride). NOTE: Optional camping is available, for volunteers only, on Friday, July 10 at the Buffalo start site (Nichols School).

FRIDAY, JULY 10

12 PM-Rest Stop Truck Setup*

*All of the above meetings take place prior to the arrival of the Albany to Buffalo shuttle on July 10 or 11. Please do not choose these positions if you need to shuttle on July 11.

Positions

SITE & INFORMATION CREW - Work Every Other Day

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • Work every other day. Ride every other day-schedule given out at meeting.
  • Work day is 7:30am-6 pm, except the last day (July 19), when it is 7am-2pm-assisting with 2nd shuttle

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver's License required
  • Staffing PM Information (answer questions/work with local community groups/hand out info.)
  • Driving a 15-passenger van or othe ride vehicles (drive from site to site on work days)
  • Taking down & setting up-tents/coolers/trash receptacles/signage/tabes & chairs/etc.
  • Moving equipment
  • Miscellaneous logistics
  • Last day is assisting with 2nd shuttle bicycle loading

ROUTE MARKER - Work Every Other Day

WORK SCHEDULE
  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • Work every other day. Ride every other day-schedule determined at meeting
  • Work day is approximately 6 AM until done.
  • Route markers leave early before bicyclists are out

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Work in teams of two that leave as early as possible (by bicycle) to check the marks on the road to ensure that they are plainly marked
  • Check with ride director, prior to leaving, to go over possible issue on route.
  • Supplement the marks as necessary to ensure our riders stay on course (carry paint with you)
  • Inform ride director of any issues encountered during the day

START/FINISH CREW - Special Schedule

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting(s) on Fridays, July 10 & 17
  • Begin START set up Saturday, July 11, 6:30 AM-6 PM
  • Assist Sunday, July 12, 6-8:30 AM
  • Ride seven days, Sunday, July 12 - Saturday, July 18
  • Begin FINISH set up Sunday, July 19 at 7 AM. Finish Sunday setup approximately 8 PM in Buffalo

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver's License Required
  • Assist with set up of tents, placing signage, parking cars, miscellaneous logistics at start and finish sites
  • Assist at start/finish sites with all needed tasks
  • Run Shuttles with 15 passenger van
  • Load bicycles onto trucks on Sunday, July 19
  • Drive 26 or 16 ft. trucks from Albany to Buffalo on last day & return trucks to rental location

PHYSICIAN/EMT/NURSE - Work & Ride Everday

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • After meeting, go through medical supplies, set up first aid kits, shop for more supplies if needed
  • Distribute First aid Kits at meetings-as needed (SAG Driver, Bike SAG & Rest Stop)
  • Work and ride every day
  • On call throughout the day. Stationed at information table daily, 5-6 PM

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Physician or RN to help with medical needs
  • Cell phone required

BICYCLE SAG - Work & Ride Everyday

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11.
  • Work and ride every day (schedule assigned by BIKE SAG Coordinator each day-Deanna Rizzo)
  • HOURS: Whatever it takes to SAG route

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • You must be physically capable of riding entire course each day
  • Get to know riders. Look for problem areas and advise Bicycle Sag Coordinator
  • Deal with emergencies and problems as they arise and notify appropriate staff
  • Carry basic first aid kit & patch kit (supplied).
  • Be assigned "road marshall" duties as needed (stage at problem areas where you may be transported to)
  • One or two bicycle sag(s) will be assigned the end (sweep). Others will be dispersed throughout the ride.
  • Note problem areas on route and report to BIKE SAG Coordinator
  • Cell phone required.

INFORMATION BOOTH MORNING (AM) - Work & Ride Everyday

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • Work Saturday, July 11, 1-5 PM at registration/information table
  • Work every day & ride every day.
  • HOURS: 5:30 AM-8:30 AM

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Assist at registration on Saturday, July 11
  • Staff Information Booth Each morning 5:30-8:30 am
  • Help break down site, load onto truck after riders have left (tent,coolers,etc.)
  • Organize trash and recyclables
  • Final sweep through lock rooms and site for lost, trash, etc.
  • Take down signage put up by ride
  • Set up PA system by 6:30 am each morning/take down at end of am meetings
  • Load water bottle fill station and charging station onto trucks
  • Assist with bicycles needing transport, monitor bikes on racks

MERCHANDISE - Work & Ride Everyday

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • Work Saturday, July 11 12-5 PM
  • Work every day & Ride every day
  • Work hours are 3:00-6:00 PM

*Note: Hours on Last day Sunday, July 19, 11 AM-1 PM at Finish Line

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Set-up, sell and keep track of all ride merchandise and income.
  • Coordinate with Staff Member from PTNY
  • Responsible for both cash and credit card purchases
  • Follow procedures provided
  • Back up information booth volunteers
  • Secure merchandise/receipts/money at end of day
  • Assist with daily prizes for scavanger hunt

REST STOP/TRUCK SET CREW - Special Schedule

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 11.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Friday
  • Work Friday, Saturday, Saturday & Sunday (July 10-11 & July 18-19)
  • Ride Sunday-Friday (July 12-17)

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver’s license required
  • Pick up Rest Stop Trucks
  • At start of ride/build up rest stop trucks (shelving/hooks/equipment/etc.) some hand tools utilized
  • Stock Rest Stop Trucks with supplies for the week
  • Assist with Registration/Shuttles on Saturday
  • Work rest stops (cut-up fruit/water supply/snacks/etc.) on Saturday/Sunday, July 18 & 19
  • Enforce good health practice with cyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
  • Clean up rest stops (clean equipment/put trash in barrels or bring to overnight site)
  • Clean up trucks at end of day
  • Transport PM Rest Stop Volunteer Bicycles if needed
  • Last Day, Sunday July 19, tear down Rest Stop Trucks and remove all supplies onto Admin. Truck
  • Last Day assist with bicycle loading

REST STOP AFTERNOON (PM) - Work & Ride Everyday

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
  • Work Every Day & Ride Every Day
  • Work Hours, everyday arrive by 10:30 AM (by bike) at PM Rest Stop, work until approx. 4:30 PM
  • Note: PM Rest Stops are 35-40 miles from start, if you cannot make it there by 10:30 AM we can transport you and your bicycle.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Set up PM rest stop (cut up fruit/set out snacks/fill water jugs/signage/trash/etc.)
  • Enforce good health practice with cyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
  • Clean up rest stop at end of day
  • Work with Rest Stop Coordinator & Rest Stop Truck Drivers

SAG DRIVER (Car SAG) - Work Every Other Day

WORK SCHEDULE

    • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
    • Attend meeting on work days at 7 AM.
    • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
    • Work Hours 7:00 am – 5 pm*

    *After hours transportation of bicyclists may be necessary, in a emergency situation or unusual circumstance.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    • Valid US Driver's License required
    • Attend morning meeting each day that you SAG (SAG Coordinator will go over the route & your schedule)
    • Vehicle supplied or you can use your own. (If you are using your own vehicle, and riding alternate days, you must be OK with someone else driving your vehicle. PTNY does not provide insurance for vehicle. PTNY will reimburse all drivers for fuel).
    • Ability to keep on route/assist bicylists, follow directions from SAG Coordinator for pick ups and staging
    • Cruise the route under the direction of the SAG Coordinator and provide help when necessary
    • Cell phone required-smart phone preferred (for navigational use)
    • Transport riders & bicycles when necessary
    • Keep SAG Coordinator advised of status
    • Follow safe driving practice (pull off of road completely/ use of hazards/high visibility vests/etc.)

    TRUCK DRIVER - Work Every Other Day

    WORK SCHEDULE

    • Attend Meeting on Saturday July 11
    • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
    • Work Hours approx. 6 am-2 pm

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    • Follow directives of truck coordinator regarding schedules, truck placement (luggage unloading and loading) & other assigned tasks. (if truck coordinator is not available Ride Directors will provide direction)
    • Valid US Driver’s License required-CDL Preferred, but not required
    • Drive a 26-foot rental truck (or smaller) from one overnight site to the next
    • Staff trucks approx.. 6 am-7:30 am (depending on luggage or admin. Truck assignment)
    • Assist with loading of baggage onto truck
    • Depart site daily by 9 am to arrive by 11 am at next overnight site
    • Truck coordinator works with Ride director to locate unloading luggage site and placement of trucks
    • Assist with unloading of baggage
    • Inform Site Set Up/Information crew the location of unloaded luggage and in inclement weather, tarp placement to protect baggage from rain.
    • Post signs on trucks for ID and signage at start and finish of luggage drops (signs to assist riders in locating their luggage)
    • Note location of luggage drop off areas to information booth
    • Transport bicycles and people as needed
    • Tag Bags that are identified as exceeding max. weight of 40 lbs.-for rider to redistribute

    ADMIN TRUCK ONLY: Assist with closing up and loading of the information area as well as set up at the next location.

    TRUCK DRIVER ASSISTANT - Work Every Other Day

    WORK SCHEDULE:

    • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
    • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
    • Work Hours approx. 6 am-2 pm

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    • Starting 6 am assist with loading of baggage onto truck
    • Depart site daily with Truck driver to arrive by 11 am at the next overnight site
    • Assist with unloading of baggage
    • In inclement weather assist with tarp placement/covering of luggage

    REST STOP (AM) CREW - Special Schedule

    WORK SCHEDULE

    • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
    • Work Every Day (Except last day) 6:45 AM-Approx. 10:30 AM/Ride everyday from AM Rest Stop (we transport you and your bicycle to AM Stop in Rest Stop Truck)
    • Schedule starts Sunday, July 12 thru Saturday, July 18 (no work on July 19)

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    • Set Up AM rest stops/work AM rest stop (place snacks/cut fruit/etc.)
    • Enforce good health practices with cyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
    • Assure Rest Stop Truck departing for PM stop has all needed supplies
    • Work with Rest Stop Coordinator to assure trucks are supplied/create lists/etc.
    • Track inventories on Rest Stop Trucks daily to assure supplies are kept up/provide lists for pick ups
    • Review information provided for fruit pickups/grocery stores/etc. & pass along to Drivers

    REST STOP TRUCK DRIVERS - Special Schedule

    WORK SCHEDULE

    • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 11
    • Work Every Other Day 6:45 AM until Approx. 5 PM/Ride Every Other Day
    • Schedule starts Sunday, July 12 thru Friday, July 17 (no work on last two days July 18 & 19)

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    • Valid US Driver's License required/Drive 16 ft. Penske Truck
    • Smart Phone or GPS for navigation to Rest Stops and Store Pick Ups
    • Set Up/Staff Rest Stops (cut up fruit/water supply/snacks/clean up/etc.
    • Enforce good health practices with bicyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
    • Pick up fruit and supplies as needed/Pick up supplies for Overnight Site
    • Clean up trucks at end of day/take trash and recyclables to dumpsters
    • Transport bicycles if needed

    OVERNIGHT CREW - Work & Ride Everyday

    WORK SCHEDULE

    • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 11
    • Work Every Night from 6 pm until 6 am starting Sunday, July 12/Ride Every Day
    • Note: Staff Information 6 PM-8 PM/ "On call" from 8 pm until 6 am

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    • Valid Driver's License/able to drive 15 passenger van
    • Must have cell phone (on call hours 9 pm-6 am)
    • Staff Information Booth 6-8 pm/provide information/contact staff as needed/merchandise sales
    • Make runs to store for ice/rider transport/etc.
    • Be "on call" for emergency transportation through-out the night
    • During Information house (6-8 PM) monitor beverages/re-supply as needed
    • Close up Information each evening/put beverages & equipment away
