Both riders and non-riding participants can volunteer to help out during the ride. Volunteers who commit to the entire tour ride for free. Time commitments are detailed below and with each job description. There are many volunteer possibilities available, including SAG and luggage truck drivers, rest stop help, route marking and more! NEW in 2018: Camping at our Buffalo start site (Nichols School) will be available to volunteers on Friday, July 6 . More information on camping will be sent with volunteer assignments in February.

You will receive an automated response when you submit your application. About the end of February applicants will be assigned volunteer positions. If applicants outnumber the jobs, then a waiting list will be formed to fill in any positions that open up between March and the ride.

Time Committments

Each job has an essential organizing meeting (see Required Volunteer Meetings).

Time commitments vary between the different jobs, each job will list the commitment required. The following is a description of the different schedules you will see with the job descriptions:

  1. Work and ride every day (most of these positions require you to be able to ride and arrive at a pre-determined time to work)
  2. Work every other day/ride every other day
  3. Special work schedules (Start/Finish and Rest Stop Day Crew)

Required Volunteer Meetings

Meetings marked with an asterisk (*) occur prior to the arrival of the July 7 shuttle from Albany. Please do not choose these positions if you need to shuttle on July 7. There is a return shuttle for $90 per person on July 15th (end of the ride). NOTE: Camping is available, for volunteers only, on Friday, July 6 at the Buffalo start site (Nichols School).

Positions

SITE TAKE DOWN & SET-UP CREW - 4 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7 in Buffalo (Nichols School)
  • If you are assigned to work the last day, July 15 (schedule is provided at July 7 meeting), then you must attend another meeting on Friday, July 13
  • Work every other day. Ride every other day
  • Work day is 7:30am-5:30pm, except the last day (July 15), when it is 7am-2pm

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Take down and set up tents, coolers, trash receptacles, signage, etc.
  • Move equipment
  • Provide backup to volunteers at information booth
  • Obtain supplies as needed
  • Drive a 15-passenger van or other ride vehicles (valid US Driver's license is required)
  • Miscellaneous logistics
  • Assist with transported bicycles

ROUTE MARKER - 4 Volunteer Positions

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work every other day. Ride every other day (schedule provided at the July 7 meeting)
  • Work day is approximately 6 AM until done.
  • Route markers leave early before bicyclists are out
  • Attend early morning meeting on a daily basis to go over possible issues on the route

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Work in teams of two that leave as early as possible (by bicycle) to check the marks on the road to ensure that they are plainly marked
  • Supplement the marks as necessary to ensure our riders stay on course (carry paint with you)
  • Inform ride director of any issues encountered during the day

START/FINISH CREW - 6 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting(s) on Friday, July 6 and Friday July 13
  • Begin START set up Saturday, July 7, 6:30 AM-5 PM
  • Assist Sunday, July 8, 6-8:30 AM
  • Ride seven days, Sunday, July 8 - Saturday, July 14
  • Additionally, one night, you will be the "on call emergency driver", 5 PM-5 AM (night sign-up meeting)
  • Begin FINISH set up Sunday, July 15 at 7 AM. Finish Sunday setup approximately 8 PM in Buffalo
  • NOTE: FINISH set up involves loading trucks in Schenectady, driving to Albany, loading bikes onto trucks for trip back to Buffalo

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver's License Required
  • Assist with set up of tents, placing signage, parking cars, miscellaneous logistics at start and finish sites
  • Assist at start/finish sites with all needed tasks
  • Load bicycles onto trucks ( approximately 125 bicycles) on Sunday, July 15
  • Drive 26 or 16 ft. trucks from Albany to Buffalo on last day & return trucks to rental location

PHYSICIAN/NURSE - 1 Volunteer Position

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • After meeting, go through medical supplies, set up first aid kits, shop for more supplies if needed
  • Work and ride every day
  • On call throughout the day. Stationed at information table daily, 5-6 PM

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Physician or RN to help with medical needs

BICYCLE SAG - 12 Volunteer Positions

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work and ride every day (schedule assigned by BIKE SAG Coordinator each day) HOURS: Whatever it takes to SAG route
  • HOURS: Whatever it takes to SAG route

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • You must be physically capable of riding entire course each day
  • Get to know riders. Look for problem areas and advise Bicycle Sag Coordinator
  • Deal with emergencies and problems as they arise and notify appropriate staff
  • Carry basic first aid kit & patch kit (supplied).
  • Be assigned "road marshall" duties as needed (stage at problem areas where you may be transported to)
  • One or two bicycle sag(s) will be assigned the end (sweep). Others will be dispersed throughout the ride.
  • Note problem areas on route and report to BIKE SAG Coordinator
  • Cell phone required.

INFORMATION BOOTH MORNING (AM) - 2 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work Saturday, July 7, 1-5 PM at registration/information table
  • Work & ride every day.
  • HOURS: 5:30 AM-8:30 AM

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Set up and take down PA system for morning meetings
  • Help break down site, load onto truck after riders have left (tent,coolers,etc.)
  • Organize trash and recyclables
  • Final sweep through lock rooms and site for lost, trash, etc.
  • Take down signage put up by ride
  • Assist at registration on Saturday, July 7
  • Load water bottle fill station and charging station onto trucks
  • Assist with bicycles needing transport, monitor bikes on racks

INFORMATION BOOTH AFTERNOON (PM) - 4 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work Saturday, July 7, 1-5 PM at registration/information table
  • Work & ride every day.
  • HOURS: Noon-7 PM
JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Assist at registration on Saturday, July 7, 1-5 PM
  • Ride to overnight site by Noon (on work days) to assist with set up of site/opening information booth
  • Be at Information Tent throughout the hours it is open, coordinate with local hosts to ensure that riders get the information they need about the site and the community.
  • Place signage
  • Monitor recyclables & coolers for beverages/ice/resupply
  • Assist with bicycles transported/monitor bicycles on racks

Note: If you cannot arrive by Noon on workdays we can transport you and your bicycle

MERCHANDISE - 2 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work Saturday, July 7 12-5 PM
  • Work every day & Ride every day
  • Work hours are 3:30-6:30 PM

*Note: Hours on Last day Sunday, July 15, 11 AM-2 PM at Finish Line

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Set-up, sell and methodically keep track of all ride merchandise and income.
  • Responsible for both cash and credit card purchases
  • Follow procedures provided
  • Back up information booth volunteers
  • Secure merchandise/receipts/money at end of day

NEW POSITION: REST STOP DAY CREW - 12 Volunteer Position

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work Set Up/Registration on Saturday, July 7, 10-5 PM
  • Work 3 More Days during the week 6:45 AM-5:30 PM/Ride for 5 days
  • 6 Rest Stop Day Crew will work during the first half of the week
  • 6 Rest Stop Day Crew will work during the second half of the week

Schedules will be assigned with volunteer acceptance letters (email) in February

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver’s license required
  • At start of ride/build up rest stop trucks (shelving/hooks/equipment/etc.) some hand tools utilized
  • Drive a 16 ft. Penske truck with rest stop supplies (2 trucks each day/4 volunteers)
  • Work as a team to set up rest stops/re-stock supplies/pick up fruit/etc.
  • Work rest stops (cut-up fruit/water supply/snacks/etc.)
  • Enforce good health practice with cyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
  • Clean up rest stops (clean equipment/put trash in barrels or bring to overnight site)
  • Pick up fruit & supplies as needed
  • Clean up trucks at end of day
  • Transport PM Rest Stop Volunteer Bicycles if needed

REST STOP AFTERNOON (PM) - 5 Volunteer Positions

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work every day & ride every day/Last day, Sunday-July 15, work 7:30 AM-10:30 AM
  • Work Day Schedule arrive (by bike) at PM Rest Stop by 10:30 am, work until approx. 4:30 pm/or last rider thru
  • Note: PM rest stops are approx. 35-40 miles from start, if you cannot make it there by 10:30 we can transport you and your bicycle.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Set up PM rest stop (cut up fruit/set out snacks/fill water jugs/signage/trash/etc.)
  • Enforce good health practice with cyclists (sanitize hands/use tongs/etc.)
  • Clean up rest stop at end of day
  • Work with Rest Stop Day Crew as a team

SAG DRIVER - 12 Volunteer Positions

This position cannot utilize the first shuttle, July 7.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 7 at 3 PM
  • Attend meeting on work days at 7 AM.
  • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
  • Work Hours 7:00 am – 5 pm*

*After hours transportation of bicyclists may be necessary, in a emergency situation or unusual circumstance.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Valid US Driver's License required
  • Attend morning meeting each day that you SAG (Asst. Ride Director will go over the route & your schedule)
  • Vehicle supplied or you can use your own. (If you are using your own vehicle, and riding alternate days, you must be OK with someone else driving your vehicle. PTNY does not provide insurance for vehicle. PTNY will reimburse all drivers for fuel).
  • Ability to utilize one of the following methods to assist bicyclists on route: 1-GPS unit 2-navigation on smart phone 3-read maps & cue sheets.
  • Cruise the route under the direction of the Assistant Ride Director and provide help when necessary
  • Cell phone required-smart phone preferred (for navigational use)
  • Transport riders & bicycles when necessary
  • Keep Assistant Ride Director advised of status
  • Follow safe driving practice (pull off of road completely/ use of hazards/high visibility vests/etc.)

TRUCK DRIVER - 10 Volunteer Positions

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday July 7
  • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
  • Work Hours approx. 6 am-2 pm

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Follow directives of truck coordinator regarding schedules, truck placement (luggage unloading and loading) & other assigned tasks. (if truck coordinator is not available Ride Directors will provide direction)
  • Valid US Driver’s License required-CDL Preferred, but not required
  • Drive a 26-foot rental truck (or smaller) from one overnight site to the next
  • Staff trucks approx.. 6 am-7:30 am (depending on luggage or admin. Truck assignment)
  • Assist with loading of baggage onto truck
  • Depart site daily by 9 am to arrive by 11 am at next overnight site
  • Truck coordinator works with Ride director to locate unloading luggage site and placement of trucks
  • Assist with unloading of baggage
  • Inform Site Set Up/Information crew the location of unloaded luggage and in inclement weather, tarp placement to protect baggage from rain.
  • Post signs on trucks for ID and signage at start and finish of luggage drops (signs to assist riders in locating their luggage)
  • Note location of luggage drop off areas to information booth
  • Transport bicycles and people as needed

ADMIN TRUCK ONLY: Assist with closing up and loading of the information area as well as set up at the next location.

TRUCK DRIVER ASSISTANT - 8 Volunteer Positions

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Attend Meeting on Saturday, July 7
  • Work Every Other Day/Ride Every Other Day
  • Work Hours approx. 6 am-2 pm

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Starting 6 am assist with loading of baggage onto truck
  • Depart site daily with Truck driver to arrive by 11 am at the next overnight site
  • Assist with unloading of baggage
  • In inclement weather assist with tarp placement/covering of luggage
