Both riders and non-riding participants can volunteer to help out during the ride. Volunteers who commit to the entire tour ride for free. Time commitments are detailed below and with each job description. There are many volunteer possibilities available, including SAG and luggage truck drivers, rest stop help, route marking and more!

You may apply using the link at the bottom of this page. Applications will be accepted until the ride starts or all positions fill.

You will receive an automated response when you submit your application. About the end of February applicants will be assigned volunteer positions. If applicants outnumber the jobs, then a waiting list will be formed to fill in any positions that open up between March and the ride.

Time Commitments:

Time commitments vary between the different jobs, each job will list the commitment required:

  1. Work and ride every day (most of these positions require you to be able to ride and arrive at a pre-determined time)
  2. Work every other day/ride every other day
  3. Special work schedules

Special Conditions:

NOTE: Due to Meeting Schedules the following positions need to be at Buffalo, NY on Saturday AM or early afternoon on Saturday:

This eliminates the ability to sign up for and utilize the first Shuttle on Saturday from Albany to Buffalo

Positions:

TRUCK DRIVER - 10 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day
  • Drive a 24-foot or smaller rental truck from one overnight site to the next.
  • Start 6am-7:30am (depending on truck assignment)
  • Assist with loading of baggage onto truck.
  • Depart site daily at 9am to arrive by 11am at the next overnight location.
  • Upon arrival, coordinate with Site Setup Crew the location of luggage and in inclement weather, tarp placement to protect baggage from rain.
  • Assist with unloading of baggage.
  • ADMIN TRUCK ONLY: Assist with closing up and loading of the information area as well as set up at the next location.
  • Finish approx. 2-3 p.m.

TRUCK DRIVER ASSISTANT - 8 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day.
  • Start 6am-7:30am (depending on truck assignment)
  • Assist with loading of baggage onto truck.
  • Depart site daily at 9am with truck driver to arrive by 11am at the next overnight location.
  • Upon arrival, assist with unloading of baggage.
  • Finish approx. 2pm-3pm

REST STOP TRUCK DRIVER - 8 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day.
  • 2 volunteers per truck - morning or afternoon (please note which you prefer).
  • Every other day, drive a small truck (16 foot) out to rest stops with supplies.
  • Help set up rest stop and support the stop by organizing the truck, getting supplies, and cutting fruit
  • At the close of the reststop, pack up leftovers, trash and equipment.
  • Make periodic trips to designated locations to pick up ice, fruit and other supplies as needed.
  • Rest Stop Truck Drivers will stay at the rest stop until last rider comes through.
  • In the evenings, load supplies and clean truck, making it ready to leave the next morning.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY NOON ON SATURDAY TO ATTEND VOLUNTEER MEETING.

MORNING (AM) REST STOP - 6 Volunteer Positions

  • Work and ride every day.
  • Bicycle to the site of the morning rest stop and help assist cyclists by preparing and serving the refreshments.
  • Clean up following close of the reststop.
  • Hours – 7:30am - 12pm.
  • Must be willing to practice and enforce good health policies. (use of gloves & tongs/bicyclists removing gloves/hand washing or use of hand cleaner/etc.)
  • NOTE: You must be able to arrive by 7:30am on your bicycle or we will provide transportation for you and your bicycle to the morning rest stop. Typical morning rest stop is 15-20 miles from start.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY NOON ON SATURDAY TO ATTEND VOLUNTEER MEETING.

AFTERNOON (PM) REST STOP - 5 Volunteer Positions

  • Work and ride every day.
  • Bicycle to the site of the afternoon rest stop and help assist cyclists by preparing and serving the refreshments.
  • Clean up following close of the reststop.
  • Hours – 10:30am – 4:30pm.
  • Must be willing to practice and enforce good health policies (use of gloves & tongs/bicyclists removing gloves/hand washing or use of hand cleaner, etc.)
  • NOTE: You must be able to arrive by 10:30am on your bicycle or we will provide transportation for you and your bicycle to rest stop. Typical PM rest stop is 30-40 miles from start.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY NOON ON SATURDAY FOR A VOLUNTEER MEETING.

SAG DRIVER - 12 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day.
  • Vehicle supplied or you can use your own.
  • If you are using your own vehicle, and riding alternate days, you must be willing to allow someone else to drive your vehicle.
  • Cruise the route under the direction of the Assistant Bike Tour Director and provide help when necessary.
  • Cell phone required.
  • Transport riders when necessary.
  • Keep Assistant Bike Tour Director advised of status.
  • Hours – 8am - 5pm (or when last rider finishes).
  • After hours transportation of bicyclists may be necessary in an emergency situation or unusual circumstance.

MERCHANDISE SALES - 2 Volunteer Positions

  • Hours: July 8: 2pm – 5:30pm, July 9: 6:30am – 7:30am and 3:30-6:30 pm, Every other day 3:30pm-6:30pm.
  • This position requires you to be in Buffalo Saturday morning (July 8) for an orientation meeting (which means you cannot utilize the July 8 shuttle, as it arrives too late).
  • Set up, sell and methodically keep track of all ride merchandise and income.
  • Responsible for both cash and credit card purchases.
  • Follow procedures as provided.

MORNING (AM) INFORMATION BOOTH - 2 Volunteer Positions

  • Work & ride every day.
  • Start at 5:30am.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down of PA system for breakfast meeting.
  • Staff information table from 6am until last rider is out.
  • Help break down information area and load onto trucks.
  • Miscellaneous tasks.
  • Organize trash and recyclables for pick up.
  • Do a final sweep through grounds and buildings for signage, lost and found items, etc.
  • Finish 9am
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY 2 PM ON SATURDAY FOR VOLUNTEER MEETING.

AFTERNOON (PM) INFORMATION BOOTH - 4 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day.
  • Hours – 12:00 noon - 7:00 p.m.
  • Be at the Information Tent throughout the hours it is open to coordinate with the local contacts and the riders to ensure that riders get the information they need.
  • Become familiar with the site prior to the arrival of the riders so that you can answer questions.
  • Help set up the information booth.
  • Work with the local host community person.
  • Place signage as necessary.
  • Monitor recyclables and coolers for beverages and resupply as needed.
  • NOTE: Must be able to arrive by noon or we will provide transportation for you and your bicycle.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY 2 PM ON SATURDAY FOR A VOLUNTEER MEETING.

BICYCLE SAG - 12 Volunteer Positions

  • Work and ride every day.
  • Hours – whatever it takes to do the course.
  • Get to know riders. Look for problem areas and advise Bicycle Sag Coordinator or Ride Director.
  • Deal with emergencies and problems as they arise notify appropriate staff or volunteer.
  • Carry basic first aid kit & patch kit (supplied).
  • Take notes about the route attractions we should promote and problem areas so that we can improve future events.
  • One or two bicycle sag(s) will be assigned the end (sweep). Others will be dispersed throughout the ride.
  • Log day's events, attractions, etc. (good and bad) in log book at Information Booth each evening.
  • Cell phone required.
  • Schedules will be assigned by Bicycle Sag Coordinator.

ROUTE MARKER - 4 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day/ride every other day.
  • Hours – 6am until done.
  • Teams of two that leave as early as possible (by bicycle) to check the marks on the road to ensure that they are plainly marked.
  • Supplement the marks as necessary to ensure our riders stay on course.
  • Carry paint to mark the roads.
  • Record day's markings, trail and road conditions in log book at Information Booth at the end of each day.

PHYSICIAN/NURSE - 1 Volunteer Position

  • Work and ride every day.
  • Stationed at Information Tent from 5pm - 6pm each day and on call.
  • Physician or RN to help with medical needs particularly in the afternoon and evening.

STRETCHING/YOGA INSTRUCTOR - 1 Volunteer Position

  • Work and ride every day.
  • Hours - 4pm-6pm.
  • Certified by nationally recognized organization in group exercise/yoga or similar certification.
  • Provide bicycle specific stretching classes and education each afternoon & evening, including gentle and moderate levels in 20-30 minutes sessions.
  • Schedule to be predetermined.

RIDE START AND FINISH STAFF **SPECIAL SCHEDULE - 6 Volunteer Positions

  • Allows you to ride every day except the final day - Sunday.
  • Start at 8am on Saturday in Buffalo, the day before the bike tour starts.
  • Assist with set up of site, pick up of vehicles & trucks and staff information table.
  • Place signage.
  • Direct cars and miscellaneous tasks.
  • Finish the first half of your duties the next day, Sunday approx. 9 a.m., as we leave our start location.
  • Start work again at 8am on the last day of the ride, Sunday, at the finish line in Albany at 8 am (We will transport you and your bicycle to Albany).
  • Load bicycles onto trucks.
  • Drive trucks from Albany to Buffalo on last day & return trucks to rental site.
  • Finish approx 8pm.
  • Ability to drive a 24 foot truck is required.
  • Additionally, each person will be assigned one evening during the tour to be on call for emergency transportation from 5pm until 5 am the next day.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY 8 AM ON SATURDAY.

SOCIAL MEDIA - 1 Volunteer Positions

  • Work and rider every day.
  • Hours: 2pm-6pm.
  • Provide education and assistance to riders who are interested in learning how to post on Facebook (w/smart phone) and other social media utilized by the Ride.
  • Provide mini seminars for small groups.
  • Set up phone charging station.
  • Assist Ride Director with social medial promotion during the week.
  • May require pre-event work.

SITE SET-UP CREW - 4 Volunteer Positions

  • Work every other day.
  • Start at 8am and generally done by 5pm.
  • Set up site at each overnight beginning on Sunday.
  • Every other day, at 8am, drive van or small truck to next site.
  • Set up pop-ups,water and beverages, signage; monitor luggage and assist cyclists in finding their luggage; tarp luggage in inclement weather; provide transportation as needed in the afternoons.
  • Pick up ice.
  • General logistic functions as assigned.
  • Crew working last day will assist at finish line.
  • MUST BE IN BUFFALO BY 2 PM FOR MTG.
