Cycle the Erie Canal Virtual Celebration
YOU DID IT! DAY 8: NISKAYUNA to ALBANY
MOHAWK HUDSON BIKE-HIKE TRAIL
You pass through Schenectady, Niskayuna, Cohoes, Watervliet and into Albany on the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail, which affords scenic views of its two namesake rivers and passes through some of the Capital Region's most cherished parks. Segments of the path were originally part of the Troy & Schenectady Railroad and provide yet another opportunity to ride through history. In 2019, the Friends of the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail and CREATE Community Studios collaborated for the first annual Color the Canal. Together, during which they displayed over 150 visual and sculptural art pieces along the trail during Days 7 and 8 of Cycle the Erie Canal.
COHOES FALLS
As you approach Cohoes Falls, you immediately hear the roaring of the water. The Falls discharges 27,000 cubic feet of water per second. Not only is it powerful, but it is an absolutely stunning sight. Those viewing it in the nineteenth century when passing it on the Erie Canal must have felt the same awe. Various walking paths provide different perspectives of the Falls, as well as the hydro plant on the lowest level..
CORNING PRESERVE
You're so close! During the last stretch of the ride, cyclists are welcomed into Albany with a view of the striking architecture of the city skyline. A wide array of shops, food, historic buildings, and, of course, the official finish line await you at the end of the Corning Preserve paved path.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES: RIDER STORIES
Naomi & Holly
"My daughter and I rode Cycle the Erie Canal last year and it was truly life changing for both of us. We loved the tour and everyone who helped to put it together. The ride was beautiful despite a couple of mornings riding in rain, and not a week goes by that we don't reflect on the experience and how it changed our lives. I'm so saddened to hear this year's event was cancelled. We both hope to ride Cycle the Erie Canal again in the future. I'm sending along a couple of photos from our ride. Thanks so much for the effort and time you put into creating a beautiful experience for us!"
