If you’re looking for a reason to hit the trails, head to Grafton Lakes State Park and climb the newly restored Dickinson Fire Tower!

Last month, community members gathered to celebrate the completion of major restoration work on the century-old tower, a beloved landmark that has watched over the park’s rolling hills for generations.

Thanks to a 2024 Park and Trail Partnership Grant, 80 sturdy new steps made from locally harvested white oak now lead visitors to the top, where fresh fencing and a new coat of paint make the 60-foot ascent feel both safe and inviting.

The project was led by the Friends of Grafton, a volunteer group formed in 1995 to preserve and maintain the tower. Their efforts have ensured that this historic lookout remains a highlight for anyone eager to experience a little adventure with a spectacular view.

So lace up your boots, pack a snack, and take the climb–New York’s public lands are even more beautiful from above.
