This year, we partnered with the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway for the 2nd Annual Greenway Cycle Challenge—a 10-mile ride through one of Western New York’s most scenic and historic greenways.

The event drew 125 participants of all ages and abilities, from toddlers to octogenarians—our youngest rider was just 3 years old, and three riders were over 80! It was a true celebration of community, outdoor recreation, and the power of trails to bring people together.

A Ride Through History and Nature

Starting in the charming village of Scottsville, riders pedaled along a serene stretch of the Genesee Valley Greenway, a former canal and rail corridor that now serves as a peaceful escape just outside of Rochester. The ride concluded at the Avon Driving Park, where participants were welcomed with:

  • Outdoor gear and trail-related vendors
  • Equestrian demonstrations, showcasing trail sharing and etiquette
  • Local food trucks and refreshments

A Ribbon Cutting and New Trail Improvements

This year’s event also celebrated new trail enhancements! PTNY staff joined the Mayor of Avon for a ribbon cutting at a new trail-side hydration station, made possible through the 2025 Genesee Trail Town Grant Program. In addition to the hydration station, the Greenway saw recent upgrades including:

  • New kiosks and trailhead signage
  • Improved infrastructure to enhance the trail experience

These improvements are helping to make the Genesee Valley Greenway a safer, more welcoming place for all types of users–from cyclists to walkers to horseback riders.

Engagement Along the Route

Interactive passport stops along the trail offered riders the chance to meet volunteers, learn more about the Greenway, and even test their trail knowledge. These stops were a hit with families and provided opportunities to talk about trail etiquette, especially when sharing the path with equestrians.

The Greenway Cycle Challenge continues to grow each year, and we’re already looking forward to next fall’s 3rd annual ride. Don’t miss your chance to experience this beautiful and historic trail on two wheels.
