Who’s on the trail: Canalway trail
Each year, PTNY and the NYS Canal Corporation produce a Who’s on the Trail report focused on the Canalway Trail system. In 2024, the report estimated nearly 3.97 million visits across the Erie and Champlain Canalway Trails—3.84 million on the Erie alone, and 130,000 on the Champlain section. These numbers come from data collected at 39 count locations over five years.
Our reports also explore usage trends, such as when and where people walk, bike, or commute, giving a richer picture of how these trails are used not just for recreation, but for daily life.
