Who’s on the trail: Canalway trail
Each year, PTNY and the NYS Canal Corporation produce a Who’s on the Trail report focused on the Canalway Trail system. The 2025 report estimates over 4 million visits across the Erie and Champlain Canalway Trails—3.66 million on the Erie Canalway Trail and 445,000 on the Champlain Canalway Trail. The 2025 report includes trail use profiles at seventeen different counter locations across the Canalway Trails.
Our reports also explore usage trends, such as when and where people walk, bike, or commute, giving a richer picture of how these trails are used not just for recreation, but for daily life.
