Over the past few weeks, the importance of trails and outdoor green spaces has come into focus more clearly than at any time in memory. As we look for ways to continue to get outside and enjoy the world around us, to restore a semblance of normalcy to our lives, and to take some time to mentally reset, time spent in nature and on trails is of the utmost value to so many people.
Trails and green spaces are essential public health infrastructure, along with infrastructure for safe walking and bicycling. New York City is seeing a significant increase (67 percent!) in the number of people using bike share to avoid public transportation. And, as more options for recreation close, people are turning to trails.
But the best part about trails and greenways is very simply that they’re fun. It’s great to be out on your favorite trail and to see people you know (and people you don’t) all enjoying time outside (just be sure to keep six feet apart as per CDC recommendations). Also, in this time of social distancing, now is a perfect time to try a new, less traveled trail.
Trails allow us to connect with nature, to see the scenic beauty around us, and to learn a little more about ourselves. Throughout this crisis, and when we return to our new normal, trails will be there for all of us – and they’re getting better, with the 750-mile Empire State Trail due to be completed by the end of 2020.
