Congratulations to our 2010 Statewide Greenway and Trail Award winners!

Parks & Trails New York held our 2010 Community Trail and Greenway Award Ceremony on Tuesday, June 8 at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

Volunteer Service Award - Elisa Zazzera and Joe Kozlowski for the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail State Park in Yonkers

Public Leadership Award - Dorothy Lewandowski and Velma Segars for the New York City Water Trail

Corporate Partnership Award - Eastern Mountain Sports, Mohawk Commons Store for the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail section of the Erie Canalway Trail in the City of Schenectady. (Accepting on behalf of the Mohawk Commons store is Eastern Mountain Sports employee Matt Sims)

Healthy Trails, Healthy People Award - Mark Bowers and Scott Reigle for the Greater Binghamton Greenway Project/Binghamton River Trail

We presented two Special Recognition Awards to Senator David Valesky (Kiki Karamintzas of the senator's staff is pictured here) and Assemblyman William Magee for their generous support for the creation and expansion of the Chittenango Creek Walk and Neighborhood Trail, Chenango Towpath Trail, and Susquehanna Greenway.

A special thanks to Assemblyman Frank Skartados and his staff - their hospitality helped make the event possible, and to Assemblyman Jack McEneny who drafted a Resolution proclaiming June 5, 2010 as National Trails Day in the state of New York.

More about the Awards

Parks & Trails New York, in conjunction with its conferences, recognizes the leadership, creativity, and donation of time, talent, and materials behind many of New York 's trails through Greenway and Community Trail Awards. Awards are given in five categories:

Public Leadership Award
The award recognizes agencies or local, county, state, or federal governmental entities or their employee(s) that have made significant and sustained contributions in support of planning, design, construction, management, promotion, or public involvement for a trail project or program.

Volunteer Service Award
The award recognizes an individual or not for profit organization that has demonstrated strong leadership and made exemplary and significant contributions to planning, construction, maintenance, promotion, fundraising, or utilization of partnerships for a trail project. Special consideration will be given to longstanding commitments.

Corporate Partnership Award
The award recognizes a business or corporation that has made a significant and exemplary contribution to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, or promotion of a trail project in partnership with the trail community.

Healthy Trails, Healthy People Award
The award recognizes an individual, not for profit organization, governmental entity, business, or corporation that has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to improving universal access to trails, promoting trail use and increasing physical activity, or creating programs that encourage a heightened awareness of active community environments. Initiatives that involve partnerships with the health care community and/or encourage trail use by persons with disabilities will be given special consideration.

Outside the Box Award
The award is an open-ended category that recognizes creativity in greenway and community trail design, management, fundraising, or organization.
