The 3rd Annual Canal Clean Sweep occured Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20. In recognition of Earth Day and in advance of the 183rd consecutive navigation season on the NYS Canal System, the NYS Canal Corporation, in partnership with Parks & Trails New York and the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation once again encouraged groups and municipalities to engage in clean up and beautification activities along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail.

This year 63 groups throughout the Canal Corridor, including communities, not-for-profit organizations and volunteers, participated in this “spring cleaning” event. People from across the state volunteered their time and energy to keep the Canal Corridor clean, and because of their hard work and dedication, the 2008 Canal Clean Sweep was without a doubt our most successful thus far!
If your community or organization didn’t participate in the 2008 Canal Clean Sweep, now is the perfect time to start thinking about doing so in 2009. With your help, the 2009 Canal Clean Sweep could be even more successful! Look for more information regarding the 2009 Canal Clean Sweep on this webpagein January, or contact Wally Elton at canalsweep@ptny.org or (518) 434-1583 to be put on our Canal Clean Sweep mailing list.

Minetto Beautification CommitteeTo recognize your group’s participation in the 2009 Canal Clean Sweep, the Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails New York will again promote all events with a statewide press release. Parks & Trails New York also will maintain a comprehensive listing of events taking place throughout the weekend here on our website.  In addition, organizing groups will receive free Canal Clean Sweep tee shirts and the Canal Corporation will provide trash bags and arrange for the disposal of collected and bagged trash.  Groups will be expected to provide their own tools.

We hope you will join us for the 2009 Canal Clean Sweep!

Please note: To host an event on Canal Corporation property, your group will need a permit from the Canal Corporation. If you do not have one, we can help you apply. We also may be able to connect you with another group or municipality that has a permit.
