The Erie Canal and the villages along it are being
rediscovered for their scenic beauty and rich role in the history
of Colonial America, the American Revolution, commerce, and women's
rights.
Parks & Trails New York, in partnership with the NYS Canal
Corporation, is working to complete what will ultimately
be a 524-mile continuous trail along New York's historic Erie, Oswego,
Cayuga-Seneca, and Champlain Canals. Today, the Erie Canalway Trail is more than two-thirds complete. This multi-use recreational
trail complements several state, federal and local efforts to reinvigorate
the historic canal corridor.
Parks & Trails New York's focus is on helping communities
plan and develop trail segments, and on developing the Canalway
Trails Association New York, a coordinated management
structure. Parks & Trails New Yorkis helping communities work together to capitalize
on the canal and trail, and
working to call attention to the rich
natural heritage along the corridor. Parks & Trails New York has also been a strong
advocate in Albany for funding to complete the CanalwayTrail. |
