7th Annual
Canalway Trail Celebration
Draws Thousands to Canal and Trail

On June 5, 2010, coinciding with National Trails Day, thousands of New Yorkers and visitors participated in the 7th annual Canalway Trail Celebration, a coordinated series of events across the state designed to highlight the value of the Canalway Trail System as a world class recreation resource and tourism destination.

This year, fifty Celebration events spanning 18 counties took place throughout the Canalway Trail Corridor, from Tonawanda to Albany and Seneca Falls to Queensbury.  These events, organized by local municipalities, civic groups, museums, businesses, and other organizations, ranged from bicycle rides and history walks to trail clean-up activities and festivals. Of particular note, Saratoga National Historical Park in Saratoga County held a grand opening of the Victory Woods Trail, a new one-mile trail featuring a fully accessible boardwalk and interpretive signs that eventually will connect with the Champlain Canalway Trail.

The Canalway Trail Celebration is organized by Parks and Trails New York, the New York State Canal Corporation, and the Canalway Trails Association New York (CTANY), with additional support from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

National Trails Day is America’s largest single trails and outdoor celebration, held each year on the first Saturday in June, with more than 1,000 trail events nationwide.
