Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) is the leading voice in the protection of New York State’s magnificent state park system and the creation and promotion of more than 1,500 miles of greenways, bike paths, river walks, and trails.

PTNY promotes the trail through events such as its Cycle the Erie Canal bike tour and website (which you’re on right now!). In partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation, PTNY runs the Empire State Trail Town program, organizes the Canal Clean Sweep, publishes the Canalway Trail Times, and manages the Adopt-a-Trail and Trail Ambassadors programs on the Canalway Trail System. The New York State Canal Corporation, a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority, operates, maintains and promotes the 524-mile New York State Canal system, as well as over 360 miles of Canalway Trails. Today, New York’s Canals serve primarily as a world-class destination for tourism and recreation. Through On the Canals programs, NYSCC/NYPA partners with local providers to offer free excursions across the Canal Corridor. Activities include kayaking, biking, boating, birding, painting and more! NYSCC also works to implement award-winning plans of Reimagine the Canals. These projects invest in developing vital forces to boost local canal corridor economies, inspire new forms of recreation and tourism, and strengthen environmental resiliency both now and in the decades to come.

Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor

ECNHC_Logo.jpgSince 2000, the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, in partnership with the National Park Service, collaborates with federal, state, and local partners to preserve the heritage of the Corridor, to promote it as a world class tourism destination, and to foster vibrant communities. ECNHC accomplishes these objectives by providing grants to local canal communities, running the Canalway Challenge, offering resources on NYS Canalway Water Trail, creating interpretive signage and educational programming, along with numerous other projects. The Corridor spans more than 500 miles across upstate New York and includes the present day Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments.
