Assistant Ride Director for Recreational Bicycle Tours Skill Areas: Event planning, community outreach, public relations, marketing Description: Parks & Trails New York runs two bike tours each year to promote parks and trails and bicycle and heritage tourism. Cycling the Erie Canal, celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, is an 8-day, 400-mile cross-state ride with 500 cyclists. Dates are July 12-July 19. The Great Hudson Valley Pedal is a 6-day, 200-mile ride from Albany to NYC, with about 150 cyclists. Dates are August. 11-16. The position has two different elements. The first is to provide support for the events in the winter and spring and then again for a couple of weeks afterwards. This includes answering potential cyclists' questions, handling registration fulfillment, maintaining databases, creating and organizing beginning-of-ride registration material, helping with planning of logistics (equipment rental, etc). The Assistant Ride Director will also have an opportunity to develop cue sheets and maps for cyclists and non-bicycling participants, work with communities on overnight and rest stop arrangements, and help to market and publicize the event. The second element is to provide direct service during the rides – purchase supplies, help to organize the volunteers, direct the vehicle support, provide support to cyclists, including minor mechanical support, and generally seeing that things are going smoothly. The Assistant Ride Director will work closely with the Ride Director, who has directed recreational bike tours for more than 10 years. The Assistant Ride Director must have a valid NYS driver’s license. Hours: Hours are flexible in terms of days and times. Hours would start in January at about 10 hours per week and increase as the rides get closer. From mid-May until the week or so before the rides commence, 15-20 hours would be ideal. The week or two before the rides involves more hours. The weeks of the tours require a full-time commitment. Salary: $10-$12/hour Work Environment: Friendly and hard-working staff. Casual atmosphere.
